Bike tour to Postel abbey
August 8, 2015 @ 10:00 am - 8:00 pm
A day trip with bikes from Eindhoven to the Postel Abbey, below the journal of the day.
Getting out of bed on a Saturday at 8.00 is not my usual routine, today however it is. A bike trip with Bright Society to the Postel abbey is on the program. The weather forecast is very good, not to hot and some clouds to give us cover from the sun. After finishing my breakfast and coffee I collected my mountainbike from the shed. Since my regular city bike is broken this will be my mode of transportation today. With my water canteen filled I jumped on my bike, resetting my bike computer for the day trip.
We met up at Koningshof in Veldhoven, where we started with some more coffee and catching up. We rented some bikes for those that didn’t have one and got on our way, first stop Eersel where we would meet up with Alok and Mayuri. They wanted to try out a tandem bike so we rented one in Valkenswaard and told them to meet us in Eersel. The route took us through the beautiful nature of “de Kempen”, the green area in the south of Brabant. It didn’t take us long to get to Eersel where we did a stop and enjoyed some home baked apple pie on the terrace of the local café. Soon we were on our way to Postel, which is located just across the border in Belgium. Just after one in the afternoon we arrived at the Postel abbey.
First we visited the shop, they sell the bread, herbs, cheeses and beers here they make in the abbey. We picked up our guide and started the tour of the abbey, learning first about the history of the place. This 11th century abbey was always a refuge for the weary traveler, one of the few places a traveler could stay without pay. They also handed out food to the poor, during the Christmas even up to 5000 people per day! We went up to the library where specially regulated bookcases housed books dating back to the 13th century. Really a site to see! Tough many of them are in old Dutch I could not read allot of it, apparently my Old Dutch isn’t on a reading level. After this we toured the abbey, visited the old Roman style church and the herb garden. We finished with a movie of the works and history of the abbey, however most of us where now very tired. I saw many heads bobbing, trying not to fall asleep! We tasted some of their famed cheeses, always nice!
Time to recover a bit of strength while enjoying a nice local beer at the terrace! We ordered the Postel Blond beer, which was very nice. Some snacks to quench our appetite, but since the day was already growing late we had to get back.
Off to the bikes again for the trip back, Postel is about 32 kilometers from Veldhoven so we still had some peddling to do. To be honest I think most enjoyed the trip to Postel better than the way back. Mental note to self, arrange for transport back next time! It was 7.30 when we got back to Veldhoven and we were all tired. I still had to continue on back, using the last of my energy to get home. When I finally opened the door of the shed to stall my bike the computer told me I had done a 73 kilometer trip today, how’s that for an active Saturday!
